Description
Interchangeable lenses
The NEX-VG20 is compatible with Sony's E-mount series of smaller, lighter lenses which are optimized for video shooting with silent operation and AF as well as Sony/Minolta A-mount lenses (via optional LA-EA2 A-mount adapter) to open up a world of creative options.

Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor
The same sensor format that Sony builds into the standard size a DSLRs. With approximately 19.5 times the surface area of conventional camcorders, the Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor makes getting cinematic video with a shallow depth of field video a breeze.

Up to 24Mbps AVCHD™ 2.0 video
The NEX-VG20 can capture video in full 1920x1080 high definition at up to 24Mbps for amazing clarity and detail, ideal for recording on to Blu-ray Disc™ media since the AVCHD™ 2.0 codec is highly compatible with the Blu-ray Disc format.

CinemaTone presets and 24p recording for cinematic quality video
For extra control over image expression, CinemaTone technology is used to deepen the color and recreate film-like color tones. Combined with 24p recording, you’ll have some of the tools you need to fulfill your need for cinematic expression.

16.1MP RAW Still Images at up to 6fps
Enjoy incredible DSLR-quality detail and clarity with 16.1MP RAW still images and even catch fast action sequences with a continuous burst rate of up to 6fps.

E-mount SEL18200mm OSS zoom lens
The Sony E-mount 18-200mm OSS lens provides an 11x zoom ratio for superior versatility. Made to shoot video, it also includes a silent auto-focus system coupled with Optical Steadyshot™ image stabilization with Active Mode3, giving you the flexibility of a removable lens with the ergonomics and operability of a Handycam® camcorder.

Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone
High quality video requires high quality audio. The Quad Capsule Spatial Array stereo microphone contains four precision placed microphone capsules that are perfectly angled at 45 degrees to provide exceptional front-side directivity and stereo separation.

Mic/Headphone jacks
Dedicated mic and headphone inputs allow for attachment of external microphones (like shotgun microphone ECM-CG50 for pin point sound recording) and headphones to monitor sound.

Optical SteadyShot™ w/ Active Mode3
Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization with Active Mode3 built-in supplied lens compensates for greater degrees of camera shake to deliver stunningly smooth video.

Accepts a DSLR A- and E-mount lenses5
Using the LA-EA2 adaptor (sold separately), you can attach the full selection of a A- an E-mount system lenses, which includes 27 current models, dozens of Minolta A-mount lenses, and an installed base of millions of lenses worldwide. Operational restrictions apply.5

3.0" Xtra Fine LCD™ 270o swivel display (921k pixels)
TruBlack™ technology brings remarkably higher contrast and brightness to the camcorders 3.0” Xtra Fine LCD™ Touch Screen display, delivering more natural, realistic colors and easier viewing in bright conditions by reducing glare. Advanced controls with expanded focus, zebra, and peaking

Dual Accessory Shoes (Alpha Hot/ Universal Cold)
The dual accessory shoes open the door to many accessories for both still and video photography, including shotgun microphones and external flash lighting.

Six Creative Style settings
Control how the camera processes your images with six finishing styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset and B&W. You can even fine-tune contrast, saturation, and sharpness to your personal taste.

Eight White Balance Modes
These help you get the shot by optimizing the camera for specific shooting situations. Select from Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Flash, and Custom modes.

Auto HDR (Photo Mode)
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by taking three consecutive shots very quickly with different exposure values, then combining the best highlight/shadow detail from them for one incredible shot. Ideal for situations where severe backlighting is present and other high-contrast scenes. (Recommended for still subjects.)

Anti Motion Blur (Photo Mode)
Perfect for situations with poor lighting or when using a telephoto lens, Anti Motion Blur mode will take 6 consecutive shots in a split second, taking the best of each individual image, and creating a single image with superb clarity and detail. Ideal for minimizing subject movement in low lighting conditions.

Handheld Twilight (Photo Mode)
Great for shots in the evening or times with little available light, Handheld Twilight mode will reduce the effect of camera shake when shooting a stationary subject by taking 6 consecutive shots then combining them all to create an image that you would have been almost impossible otherwise.

Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO)
Dynamic Range Optimizer improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows while maintaining highlight detail. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off.

25-point Auto Focus
Twenty five AF points cover a very wide area of the scene, for accurate focusing even when the subject is far from the center of the frame.7

AF/MF switch for creative control
Whether you’re shooting video or still images, the included 18-200mm lens will auto focus quietly and quickly, however if you want to utilize MF, this simple switch will put you in the driver’s seat.

HDMI® output for HD viewing
Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV via the camera's HDMI® output (HDMI cable not included)

Anti-Dust Technology
Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistently clear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor's low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor, especially when you're changing lenses in-between video sessions.

Removable Flash Media slot
For convenient storage and sharing of your images and videos, the media card slot accepts Memory Stick Duo™ / Memory Stick PRO Duo™ / Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™ media and SD/SDHC/SDXC media (all sold separately).

Comments about Sony NEX-VG20H Interchangeable Lens Full HD Camcorder with SEL18200mm Lens:

There is no other camera I found on the market that delivered what I needed in this price range, the Sony NEX-VG20 does what I need it to do. The only drawbacks are a few things in the audio realm.

The built-in mics sound great but I often need to use an external wireless mic on a presenter. I have a Sony UWP trans/recv pair that I picked up with a PD-170 many years ago, still works great. Plugging this into the 3.5mm stereo mini jack on the VG20 works fine, except the AGC circuit seems to add just a tiny bit of hiss to the recording. I'm still experimenting with trying to find the right balance of transmitter attenuation, and VG20 recording level, but it's definitely not so horrible that I can't work with it.

What I wish it had was the ability to continue using the built-in mic if I plug in the wireless mic... any sort of menu option that allows me to route the incoming mic to, say, channel 2, but keep using the built in mic for channel 1, I don't mind that it's dual mono. Sometimes when shooting live events I need that ambience (laughter, applause, etc.) for the edit. My workaround for this was to dig up an ancient Sony ECM-MS908C M/S microphone and use a special 3.5mm stereo adapter - it splits off the left and right side to individual left and right 3.5mm mono jacks. I plug the 908c into the left input and the UWP receiver into the right input. No, it's not pretty, but it works. The AGC circuit works in stereo though, so loud volume coming in to one channel will affect the level of the other channel... BUT, I was able to find a happy medium by using the adjustable 'monitor' output of the UWP instead of the line-level 'output' of the UWP. Besides, if I'm on something serious enough, we'd have a separate audio recording anyway.

In my list of "cons" I mentioned "no audio auto-switch" and by that I mean that once you start recording with something plugged into the mic input jack, the camera seems to want to stay with it. I had a situation a few weeks back where a presenter finished his lecture and took Q&A as he walked into the audience (small room). I pulled the cable out of the mic input and the camera warned me to plug it back in, instead of just switching to the built-in stereo mic. I had to stop recording, at which point the VG20 finished up that file, the built-in stereo mic suddenly woke-up, and I was able to start recording again.

Would have loved a servo zoom, but I knew that going in, and I've adjusted just fine to working the zoom manually.

Bottom line for me is that it's a GREAT video camera, it's what it was designed to do. Look, there are a ton of options out there for photographers and videographers, and you need to do your homework and weight the pros and cons of each, and make a smart decision. This camera is EXACTLY what I needed. Yes, I knew the audio was a bit limited when I purchased it but I'm willing to work with it to get what I need, I didn't jump in and regret anything. If you're a photographer, get a photo camera. If you're a videographer solely after video and you do that day in day out, get a more powerful camera if you want/need more functions. If you're a photographer wanting to dabble in video, this might not be for you. If you're a videographer wanting to shoot photos now and then, this is probably a great camera for you. The VG20 does video great, and the photography side, for me at least, is plenty powerful.

Last thing I'd like to say is the manual white balance that some people are complaining about here and there on the web. I was confused as well, as there are 4 white balance options: indoor, outdoor, automatic, and manual. They all made sense except for manual, as it told me to press a specific button on the camera when shooting full-frame white. Where was this button? I figured Sony made a mistake and so I was stuck with auto white if I needed it. No, it's there... but it's on the touch-screen, you press the soft-button on the screen, and the white is set perfectly. And if need be you can shift the white up or down in a submenu if you prefer slightly warmer or cooler than what the manual white captured.

Great camera overall, very satisfied customer of another Sony product, and a very satisfied OneCall customer as well!

Best for the price range

By Blues fan Tina

About Me Semi-pro Videographer

Pros

  • Easy to Use
  • Good Image Stabilization
  • Good in Low Light
  • Great Picture Quality
  • Great Sound
  • Large Clear LCD
  • Zoom range/performance

Cons

  • Heavy zoom lens

Best Uses

  • HD Shooting
  • Home Movies
  • Indoors/Low Light
  • Music performances
  • Travel
  • Weddings/Events

Comments about Sony NEX-VG20H Interchangeable Lens Full HD Camcorder with SEL18200mm Lens:

Love this camera for shooting live music performances, outperforms other cameras I've seen on Youtube from the same events. Musicians love the clear audio, could purchase a pro mic but doesn't seem necessary. The 55-200 mm lens makes it too heavy for hand-holding for very long, but a wide angle lens makes it light enough and provides better clarity. Zoom lens is manually operated.

Comments about Sony NEX-VG20H Interchangeable Lens Full HD Camcorder with SEL18200mm Lens:

The camera is phenomenal, it does so much, and you dont lose the desire of enjoying it after day one, I wish there were more white balance options or color settings but you can't complain, it does so much and allows the videographer to have full control. Sony lies about features

By NEXZ

from Undisclosed

Comments about Sony NEX-VG20H Interchangeable Lens Full HD Camcorder with SEL18200mm Lens:

Why is face tracking focus turned off when white balance is selected? This does not make any sense. The user has to choose between focus or white balance control. The user can't have both. Thanks for nothing Sony.

Missing advertised features

By JAMJAM

from New York, NY

Comments about Sony NEX-VG20H Interchangeable Lens Full HD Camcorder with SEL18200mm Lens:

Until sony recognizes that this camera is missing the advertised ability to make picture adjustments, people should hold off on buying it. This camera has either been shipped with incomplete firmware or SONY has intentionally crippled it while forgetting to let their marketing team in on their dirtily little secret.
