But is a front projector the right choice for your home theater?
The pros and cons of front projectors
Whether you're watching your favorite movie or the big game, a front projector delivers vibrant, detailed playback for all your video sources. If you're willing to set up your viewing room appropriately, front projectors can offer an amazingly detailed image. And you can vary the picture size, unlike with TV sets.
These displays work best in a dark room (you can use blackout panels to block out daylight), and require you to provide an external receiver, speakers, a tuner (for TV), and a DVD or Blu-ray player (for movies).
How to choose a front projector
So you've decided to pick out a front projector. Great! Here are some features to look for:
- Imaging technology: These days, most front projectors for sale use either LCD or DLP technologies to display the image. Both offer superb color. Due to its color wheel design, DLP can display "rainbow" artifacts for certain people susceptible to seeing them. On the other hand, DLP front projectors also produce superb black levels.
- Contrast ratio: Simply put, the higher the ratio, the richer the blacks and other dark colors.
- Connections: Are you using your front projector to show presentations from a computer? If so, you'll need a PC (VGA) port. Otherwise, make sure your DVD player and tuner have outputs compatible with your projector's inputs.
